WHAT IS GRASTON TECHNIQUE OR MUSCLE SCRAPING?

Instrument Assisted Soft Tissue Mobilization (IASTM) also known as Graston Technique, is a form of treatment for myofascial restrictions and scar tissue. After as injusry or even repititive loading and unloading (weight training) to the muscle, a micro tear can occur causing inflammation and the formation of new cells. This is when fibrosis and the formation of scar tissue to the soft tissues take place. These changes reduce tissue elasticity and cause muscle adhesions, which can lead to diminished soft tissue flexibility, mobility, and pain. These scar tissues and myofascial restrictions can limit the flow of oxygen, nutrients, and collagen synthesis to the soft tissues.

IASTM instruments are specially designed to mobilize scar tissue and myofascial restrictions. The goal of IASTM is to remove the scar tissue, and promote a return of normal pain free body function.

3 Reason to Try IASTM For Pain Relief

Reducing your need for anti-inflammatory medicines

IASTM techniques have shown to significantly reduce pain and improve function in various clinical trials. With less pain comes less need for anti-inflammatory medicines, which can lead to multiple side effects causing various health problems down the road.

Decreases Soreness (DOMS) Muscle Pain

Although you may not initially know what DOMS stands for, if you’ve ever played a sport or pushed yourself hard at the gym and felt sore days later, then you’ve experienced DOMS.

DOMS stands for Delayed Onset Muscle Soreness and it’s the achy feeling you feel after a hard workout. IASTM works by helping the body heal itself by breaking down the tissue and allowing it to start healing. For this reason, IASTM therapy is a highly prefered treatment for many athletes.

Decreasing overall amount of physical therapy treatment you’ll need

IASTM, specifically targets soft tissue which makes for a faster time in rehabilitation. As we’ve said before, IASTM works by breaking down the tissue and facilitating the healing process to begin. With IASTM you can expect to experience faster rehabilitation periods from the most minor to the most major/chronic muscle strains.

Does IASTM sound right for you?
